Even though Channel Islands National Park is just about 30 miles away from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area (with an estimated 17+ million people!), it remains as being one of the lesser visited National Parks in the United States, ranking at #43 out of 60 parks in attendance. However, if you consider only the people that make it to one of the islands (rather than just the visitor center), it would rank in the bottom 10 in attendance! Saguaro National Park is named after the giant cactus that are native to the Sonoran Desert. These impressive plants live as long as 150 years or more, and may take between 75-100 years to grow their first arm (if they grow one at all!).
This minimally visited park is located just about 2 hours south of Phoenix, yet it only draws around 800,000 visitors each year. Sure, this park is relatively small (just over 91,000 acres) and easily ranks in the bottom-half of parks by size. Though this park lacks in size, there is a great deal to do and explore.
North Cascades National Park isn’t particularly well known, let alone the Maple Pass Loop. Heck, we almost passed this hike up in favor of other, shorter trails inside of North Cascades.
What a mistake that would have been.
The Maple Pass Loop Trail ended up being one of our family’s most favorite hikes of all-time, and it remains as Pete’s #1 hike in all his 43 years of traveling.
In Glacier National Park, the weather can be unpredictable in the summer and figuring what to pack for your trip can be a challenge. Unlike other National Parks to the south, this park can see snowfall during most months of the year. You could find yourself in freezing temperatures at any time during the year as well.
