Best Airports Near Acadia National Park

Finding the best airport for Acadia National Park is not entirely straightforward. While there are airports within a very short distance, amenities are limited at the airport (such as rental cars), flight options are limited by both carriers number of flights per day.  But while it may take a bit of driving to get here, the reward for visiting Acadia is incredible and something you should do!

While visiting the northeast, it’s likely that you will also want to visit some of the other beautiful spots in the area.  This includes the White Mountain National Forest (where there is a ton of amazing hiking), some of the quaint towns (like those near Camden State Park), checking out the L.L. Bean Factory Store in Freeport, ME or even visiting the Portland, ME or Boston, MA areas for some shopping and great food!

AIRPORTS NEAR ACADIA NATIONAL PARK: OVERVIEW

Normally when selecting the best airport for flying into a park you’ll want to do some research on where you want to enter the park.  There are several entrances to the park, but nearly all first-time and repeat visitors will at some point want to go into the Hulls Cove Entrance Area, which is how you access the main part of Mt. Desert Island.  There are other smaller entrances, like the entrance to Schoodic Peninsula, but for the purpose of this article we’ll stick to discussing the Hulls Cove Entrance as your main point of entry.

THE CLOSEST AIRPORTS TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

Hancock County – Bar Harbor Airport:

  • Symbol: BHB
  • Location: Trenton, ME
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (8 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round
  • Notes: Bar Harbor airport is certainly the closest option. However, flights are only available from Boston, MA on a single engine propeller powered aircraft operated by Cape Air.  There are several flights a day, but they are known for being turbulent.  Rental car facilities at the airport are also limited.  That being said, the flights are very reasonably priced and you’ll be sure to have some great scenery!

Bangor International Airport:

  • Symbol: BGR
  • Location: Bangor, ME
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (48 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round

Augusta State Airport:

  • Symbol: AUG
  • Location: Augusta, ME
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (119 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round

Portland International Jetport:

  • Symbol: PWM
  • Location: Portland, ME
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (175 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round

Fredricton International Airport:

  • Symbol: YFC
  • Location: Fredricton, NB (Canada)
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (195 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round
  • Notes: If you are flying into Fredricton, just be advised that you will have to cross the border into the United States, so travel times may be a bit longer than you expect depending on wait times at the border.

Boston-Logan International Airport:

  • Symbol: BOS
  • Location: Boston, MA
  • Closest Park Entrance: Hulls Cove Entrance (276 miles)
  • Operating Season: Year-round
  • Notes: By far, Boston has the most flights of any of the airports listed with the longest drive. However, this is the best option if you want to have a nice drive up the Maine Coast and perhaps visit some of the other sights that New England has to offer.
